Racism, Verona curve closed

The Curva Sud Inferiore of the Bentegodi stadium in Verona will have to remain closed for the next two matches that the yellow-blue team will play at home.

This was established by the Serie A sports judge, Gerardo Mastrandrea, after yesterday, during the match between Hellas and Cagliari “in the 7th minute of the second half, chants of racial discrimination were chanted against a Cagliari player”. These are the howls and chants for Makoumbou, a fact which after the match had been stigmatised, among others, by the Sardinian coach Claudio Ranieri. “Those in charge need to do something – Ranieri had said -, even to blame the color of the skin…It was a shame to hear the chants against Makoumbou, but it has now become an Italian custom.” In the press release from the Serie A which makes the measures of the sports judge known, it is also specified that «the collaborators of the federal prosecutor’s office, positioned in various parts of the facility, reported, in their report, that these chants were sung by approximately 1,000 of the 1,900 supporters of the Hellas Verona company occupying the sector called ‘Curva Sud Inferiorè’. It is then specified that the provision of closure of the sector will be discounted by the club because Verona had already been sanctioned for such acts on 13 June last, with suspension of the sentence. Therefore, being a repeat offender after yesterday’s events, the penalty will be applied «as provided for in the art. 28 paragraph 7 CGS”.
