Oscar González goes to the Yankees after being claimed on Waivers

The Yankees announced Friday that they have claimed Dominican outfielder Oscar González off waivers from the Guardians.

González, who will turn 26 years old in January, made a name for himself in Cleveland in 2022 when he had the Spongebob Squarepants theme song as his song when he came to the batter’s box. Additionally, he helped the Guardians win the American League Central Division that year and hit crucial hits in victories over the Rays and the Yankees themselves in that postseason.

That season, González hit .296/.327/.461 with an OPS+ of 125, 27 doubles, 11 home runs and 43 RBIs. But this year, the Dominican had a line of .214/.239/.312 (OPS+ of 53) and was returned to Triple-A for much of the season.
