Fortuna Düsseldorf has reached the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup for the first time in four years. Coach Daniel Thioune’s team prevailed 2-1 in the second division duel at 1. FC Magdeburg after a long deficit thanks to two-time goalscorer Jona Niemiec.
Baris Atik (15th) had put the home team in the lead. But substitute Niemiec (87./90.+2) rewarded a strong second half from the guests. His goals bring Düsseldorf further secure income of 1.7 million euros.
At first Atik still had “Fortuna” on his side: his shot from over 25 meters was intended as a cross that Luc Castaignos could no longer reach. Karol Niemczycki in the Fortuna goal had no chance of defending.
Magdeburg, who started with the same eleven as in the 4-1 win against 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the league and pressed high as usual, could have led higher. But Xavier Amaechi only hit the outside post (31′).

In the second half, the guests played stronger, had significantly more possession of the ball and had a few opportunities to equalize. Captain Jordy de Wijs hit the post with his head (48th), then Niemiec made his big appearance.
