Nicolás Copello Faces Suspension and Fine for Alleged Racist Insult in Brazilian Basketball League

Nicolás Copello played in the last two seasons at Instituto, was champion of the National League in the 2021/2022 campaign and also won the Super 20 in 2021, and in this edition he went to play in Brazil. The sports justice system of the Brazilian League sanctioned Copello this Wednesday with a ten-match suspension for allegedly having uttered a racist insult to a rival during a match. The Argentine was also sentenced to pay a fine of $1,635 for the events that occurred on December 6 in the match between Minas and Cerrado Basquete, played in Belo Horizonte.

The player Matheus Santos, from Cerrado Basquete, a victim of the offenses, also filed a complaint with the Police, since racist offenses in Brazil are considered a crime punishable by between two and five years in prison.

After the game, Minas published a note in which he stated that he “does not tolerate and repudiates all and any type of prejudice,” making himself available to the authorities to collaborate with the investigations.
