For American athletes who are suddenly exchanged with another club, as often happens, everything happens in a very short time: they have to find a new house, a school for the children and the athletes have to integrate into a team and an unknown environment. Not so simple, then.

New recruits to the New York Yankees baseball club sometimes have an additional adjustment to make. Alex Verdugo recently experienced this.

The 27-year-old – from the Boston Red Sox – had to say goodbye to… his beard. Otherwise he risked not being aligned. Among the Yankees, an unusual rule dating from the last century is in fact still applied: players are not allowed to wear a beard or long hair. It was established in 1976 by the former owner of the Bronx-based club, George Steinbrenner.

But Alex Verdugo doesn’t seem too attached to his facial hair. Although preparation for the new season only begins in February, the new New York recruit has already used his razor. He didn’t even leave his mustache, which would have been in compliance with Yankee regulations.

The Tucson, Arizona native is far from the first baseball player to have to make hay upon arriving in New York. The member of the prestigious Hall of Fame Randy Johnson also had to comply in 2005. He was forced to cut off his long hair (while keeping the mustache).

Hereditary piloerection

In 2023, this rule about facial hair seems to be from another age. Already in 1976, when it was established, certain players had quarrels with the owner of the club.

But in the recent past, recruits have generally complied with the rule without rebelling. A probable reason for this docility: the Yankees pay among the best salaries in the North American professional league (MLB). However, these pilar constraints apparently also have negative consequences for the New York team.

His former player Cameron Maybin recently wrote on the social network

“You’d be surprised how much more attractive the Yankees would be if they removed this facial hair rule”

In other words: many players would find it crazy. This is also what Aneudys Duran reports at New York Times. And this man has some credibility: he is the barber to several MLB stars, who he has reportedly heard some players preferred to sign with other teams because of this rule.

But nothing should change immediately. Long hair and beards also ruffle the hackles of new owner Hal Steinbrenner, who took over from his father who died in 2010. The New York Yankees have another particularity: they are the only club in the league not to have players’ names on their jerseys.

So if you like the hippie look and the flocking of the tunic is an essential part of the fan shop for you, we advise you to support another team.

These three activities are essential cardio in fitness. Here are their advantages and disadvantages for each, so you can find what suits you best.

Cardio, short for cardiovascular exercise, refers to any form of rhythmic physical activity that accelerates the heart rate and breathing so that the heart and lungs can deliver oxygen to the muscles being used. This is basically the type of exercise that makes you panting and panting…and that many people dread.
