Goalkeeper Change at Tivoli: Novakovic Initiates Rotation and Leroy Zeller Steps Up

There is a goalkeeper change at the Tivoli under the Christmas tree. Radomir Novakovic initiated the rotation. The reigning number 2 at Alemannia Aachen wants to change careers again quickly. After six months, he realized that there was no way around regular goalkeeper Marcel Johnen. He moves on to gain more match practice. According to information from this newspaper, he is in discussion with Eintracht Trier’s designated promoted team. His successor auditioned for the new role in his presence at the Tivoli – and was accepted. “We don’t want to put any obstacles in Radomir’s way and are now getting an ambitious successor,” says Technical Director Erdal Celic.

And so Leroy Zeller now becomes the next challenger for the established Johnen. The 23-year-old meets the U rule, which requires at least four players on each match day who have not yet turned 23 on June 30 at the start of a match year. You must also have German citizenship and not have played a senior international match for another national association. The rule is certainly problematic in Alemannia’s matchday squad, in which A-youth players have recently appeared regularly in order to meet the formal requirements.

Zeller comes from Sinzenich, his father was a member of the national judo team, his mother is a yoga teacher, his younger brother Jason is an outstanding boxer with a chance of starting at the next Olympic Games.

The goalkeeper giant, 1.95 meters tall, has lived in the USA for the last few years because of his economics studies. At the same time, he had made a name for himself in California. With his team from Santa Barbara, he broke the college record for most games without conceding goals, he was also named “Goalkeeper of the Year” and was named the best college goalkeeper of all West Coast states.

At the beginning of January he was invited to a trial training session by the English first division club Nottingham Forest. “Mindset is the most important thing in life,” he told the “Stadtanzeiger” a few months ago. “There is someone somewhere right now who is working harder than you” – this idea motivates him to always give 100 percent. On game day itself, he has the ritual of writing three targets on a tape, which he then sticks to his right shin pad. He will now maintain the ritual at the Tivoli until the end of the season.
