Navarra Arena Hosts Successful Spanish Judo Championship with Local Athletes on the Podium

A total of 250 judokasrepresentatives of 18 autonomies, have taken this Saturday, December 2, the Navarra Arena. For the first time, the Navarrese venue has hosted the Absolute Spanish Judo Championship. The athletes, divided by weight, have faced each other on the 40×40 meters of each of the three tatami mats installed under the watchful eye of the judges and the thousand of fans who, on average and although there have been rotations throughout the morning and afternoon sessions, have followed the competition from the stands, making themselves noticed based on the decisions made and cheering on their favorites.

After the morning qualifiers, starting at 3:00 p.m., the fights for the bronze medals were held and, later, the culmination was the final duels and the awards ceremony.

In them, three Navarrese protagonists. The Pamplona native Santiago Diaz Lopez, in one of the last fights of the day, returned to the national podium at 38 years old in the over 100 kilo category. He soon gave up the gold by strangulation against the Valencian Davit Kevlishvili but the second step on the podium left him “very happy”, also being grateful for “the opportunity of being able to compete in this championship in front of our family, friends, gym mates and many young practitioners of this sport that have come to see us.

Díaz, who works as a judo teacher at the Takumi School and who was already champion of Spain in 2009, was very satisfied with having returned to the podium and even more so with the atmosphere in which the competition was held. “As the three previous fights have gone by, I have been feeling more and more confident but in the final I have lost very quickly. I still have the regret of not having been able to fight it more,” he acknowledged, before highlighting the “good job” that is being carried out by the Navarra Judo Federation regarding the “sports promotion. Surely, little by little, all that work and energy that is being allocated to organizing courses, children’s festivals, championships… is paying off,” he acknowledged.

Before, Asier Murillo Martínez de Lizarrondo He had managed to win the bronze medal in less than 60 kilos after the repechage after having fallen to the Valencian Luis Barroso López, who ultimately became the national champion. “Luis is a very good friend of mine.
