Mistakes, errors, unreal situations… in the cycling year that is ending

Let’s get to know the possibilities of cycling on the roads of Lleida

Lleida, the capital, but also its surroundings, the sum of the Terres de Lleida, the area of La Plana and the Pyrenees, represent an enviable place for level cycling, an extensive territory of hidden and unknown routes, unrelated to traffic, safe and varied.

From the deepest landscapes of the plain, to heights that exceed 2000 meters in the PyreneesLleida has everything for all types of cyclists and cycling interested in enjoying cycling but also landscapes, towns, culture and at the end a good meal and rest.

Terres de Lleida, the flat and a lot of hidden hardness

The denomination of Terres de Lleida includes up to six regional references, from El Segrià to Les Garrigues passing through La Noguera, Pla d’Urgell, La Segarra i Urgell. It is a land wedged between mountains, to the south of the mountain ranges that Lleida shares with Tarragona and to the north the foothills of the Pyrenees.

The range here is as wide as it is unknown, although the area has a reputation for being flat, there are some places of maximum demand. Places that in the end are beautiful and unknown. Places especially recommended in spring, when the weather is more pleasant, without the winter fog or summer heat.

It happens, for example, in Les Garrigues, the southern region of Terres de Lleida, an area marked by oil work, very unique in terms of landscape, with a large dispersion of walls and small climbs, which add meters of unevenness to each exit. It borders Priorat and Muntanyes de Prades, already in Tarragona, and offers many small towns, such as Vilosell or Juncosa de Les Garrigues, with their charm and within a network of very quiet roads.

Segrià is located to the west, being the region of the capital, within the most authentic plain. All the surroundings of Lleida offer very relaxed routes through farmland, we are talking about towns like Raimat and Seròs, while to the south the route is the continuation of the harshness of Les Garrigues.

Trapped in the middle of great regions, the Plan de l’Urgell includes a unique passage like the Estany d’Ivars, with paved sections and also others that encourage you to try gravel cycling. The area is within reach of circular routes, starting from cities such as Mollerussa or Tàrrega to accumulate good mileage.

For its part, La Segarra is a region with a certain trap for the cyclist. We are talking about an area with two very defined parts. The north borders the Solsonès, therefore it is the prelude to the Pre-Pyrenees, and the south, although it seems flat, the capital, Cervera, and its surroundings offer many terrains.

La Noguera is the largest region in Catalonia. Located to the south of the Serra del Montsec, it offers routes to one of the great treasures of Lleida for the cyclist. Around this mountain range that separates La Noguera from Pallars Jussà, there is an infinite network of routes and roads of all kinds to discover in a very beautiful transition area. Further south, the region offers flatter and more comfortable terrain around Artesa de Segre and Cubells.

The magical Pyrenees

The connection between road cycling and the Pyrenees dates back more than a century, when the Tour de France successfully entered a mountain range that makes headlines every year among lovers of this sport. Lleida places seven regions in this mountainous environment.

Just above La Noguera, the Pallars Jussà has its epicenter in the “conca de Tremp”, between the capital of the region and La Pobla de Segur with a very special place, the Vall Fosca that seems designed to enjoy road cycling. In addition, important climbs are located nearby. Above Pallars Jussà, Alta Ribagorça hosts the famous Vall de Boí with its great artistic and landscape value.

Towards the north we have the most unique region of Lleida, the Vall d’Aran, another place designed for cyclists, with two emblems such as La Bonaigua and Portilló, but with the incentive of having nice climbs within reach of the capital, Vielha. We are talking about Artiga de Lin, the Baths of Tredòs and the Saut deth Pish, in the municipality of Arròs. The Aran Valley has the addition of a powerful and varied hotel offer.

The Pallars Sobirà is located between two large “passes” for cyclists, La Bonaigua to the west and Coll del Cantó, to the other side. We are talking about a route through the middle of the Pyrenees with the Sort-Esterri axis with access to such cycling points as Espot and l’Estany de Sant Maurici on one side and Port Ainé on the north.

On the other side of the Coll del Cantó, we find l’Alt Urgell and its capital La Seu d’Urgell, which is the most central in the entire Lleida Pyreneesbeing a hub for itineraries facing the cross-country ski slopes towards La Cerdanya, functioning as an entrance to Andorra and a link to the Solsonès routes.

La Cerdanya is a region with a more open landscape, but with very interesting towns due to their uphill location. From Puigcerdà, every year the historic Macha Tres Nacions cycle tour fills the area with cyclists.

And finally the Solsonès, a great unknownwhich had its leading role with the Serra-Seca but which holds treasures such as the Pla de Busa and the cols de Port, la Mina and Jou, a perfect chain to enjoy a changing environment that announces the imminence of the Pyrenees, without a doubt a candy for cyclists who want to explore Lleida and its territory.
