Manchester United Manager Erik ten Hag Discusses Research on Injuries and Plans for Stronger Squad

Erik ten Hag has explained that Manchester United carried out research into why they had sustained so many injuries this season.

Lisandro Martinez, Casemiro, Mason Mount, Tyrell Malacia and Amad are among the current long-term absentees, with a host of other stars including Luke Shaw, Christian Eriksen, Kobbie Mainoo, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Raphael Varane have previously suffered lengthy injury absences.

“We did research about it but there are so many factors,” Ten Hag said on the injury situation this season. “You can’t point at one factor but in this moment what is most important is that we have to deal with it, and we have to work to get the players back as soon as possible because we know we have a strong squad once we have everyone on board (fit).”

Ten Hag was then pressed on whether the investigation would help reduce the volume of injuries going forwards.

“Sometimes also it can be some bad luck — and I think what definitely hurts was that we had in crucial positions we had the problems,” Ten Hag added. “Like now with the central defenders, many central defenders, so its not only one — there are four injured or ill.

“Left full-back we struggled for a long time this season — Luke Shaw and Tyrell (Malacia). Then on the right wing we had our problems, around Antony and also (Amad) Diallo at the same moment so we struggled a lot in such key positions.

“Don’t forget Casemiro — he is a huge impact player for us and now over a long period he is not available.”

Ten Hag added that he would have a stronger squad at his disposal for the second half of the season.

“You have to deal with that but everyone understands that when key players are not available it will have a negative effect on results,” the United boss added. “Still, we are in a place where we can change the story, change the season. So I am confident when the players are back we will have a strong squad.”
