Judo Corujo Athletes Achieve 6th DAN and Make History in Pola de Siero

Last Sunday, December 17, several athletes from the Judo Corujo club in Pola de Siero took the graduation exams, which were held at the El Cristo sports facilities in Oviedo. The judokas, Mario Corujo and Esteban Díaz, are the first from Pola de Siero who achieved the step to 6th DAN at the same time. “This belt that is white and red is a turning point, when you get the black belt you can still go up the ladder at different levels which are the DAN, from 1st to 10th. From 1st to 5th are the black belts; the sixth, seventh and eighth DAN are white and red and the ninth and tenth are red, the latter are almost anecdotal, because there are very few in the world. Reaching the sixth, seventh or eighth grade is already very important and is a turning point,” they acknowledged.

The judokas ensured that the belts were always prepared, because you are active in the sport and for the next step you prepare over the years, in this case it took them 7 years, since an experience of one more year is required that the DAN. “What we were asked was to present the study of judo in different techniques, in each exam a different kata is requested,” they comment.

The athletes commented that they believe it will be the last time that a grade step for the 6th DAN takes place in Asturias, so the next ones will most likely have to travel to Madrid. The examiners are part of the National Federation, which in this case delegated to that of the Principality of Asturias, because there is a very good level of teachers who can take the test at this level.

Getting the 6th DAN for Díaz and Corujo has been the culmination of a great year, since it has been 25 years since they got their first black belt, since they have been practicing this sport for almost 40 years. Added to this is being champions of Asturias, who have been undefeated for 14 years. They also participated in the Spanish championship and this year they won bronze in a European cup. “This has been the culmination, we are also the four in Siero who achieved the 6th DAN, the other two are also from the Corujo Judo Club, Manuel Corujo and Jesús Taberna, and it is the first time that two people from Siero have achieved it at the same time and from the same club”, they highlighted.

The rest of the athletes who achieved the grade were: Lorena Corujo who obtained the 5th DAN, two 3rd DAN were awarded Rubén Lobeto and Laura Gutiérrez; and three first DAN. The Corujo club has 100 licenses, from the youngest ones who are 4 years old to the oldest ones who are over 60 years old. They train at the new sports center in Pola de Siero and in Carbayín Bajo, they train on Tuesdays and Thursdays in Pola and on Wednesdays and Fridays in Carbayín, starting at 6 p.m.
