WOERDEN • The Hijmenberg-Tavenier couple from Woerden received a visit from Victor Molkenboer on Wednesday morning. The mayor came by to congratulate the two on their 60th wedding anniversary.

Johan Hijmenberg (81) and Brigitta Tavenier (78) tied the knot on December 19, 1963 in Amsterdam. Johan was born in Amsterdam, but Brigitta was born in the German city of Karlsruhe. They met while dancing at the De Brakke Grond party hall in Amsterdam, where Johan competed in dancing. Within a year they were in love, engaged and married.

Shoe industry
The couple has lived in Woerden for four years, but before that in Utrecht for 49 years. There Johan worked as a manager in the shoe industry. Brigitte worked as a hairdresser, but stopped when the children came. When they were a bit older, she started working in a clothing boutique. She then worked at a perfumery shop on Hoog Catharijne until her retirement. The two’s hobbies included tennis, badminton, competitive dancing, skiing and surfing. Nowadays they are more concerned with playing rummikub, playing cards and walking every day.

Johan and Brigitta had three children: daughter Diana (58) and sons Richard (55) and Edwin (54). There are now also seven grandchildren. The births of the ten children and grandchildren are the most important memories of the past sixty years.

Party
According to the couple, the secret of their diamonds is enjoying everything in life: in good times and bad. They try to make every day a party. This motto hangs on a sign in their living room. Johan surprised his wife with a bouquet of 60 roses. Their children arranged a large champagne bottle made of balloons for their parents’ house.

Mayor Victor Molkenboer congratulated the diamond wedding couple with a basket full of regional products.
