Jannik Sinner: Planning for Success in 2024

Jannik Sinner has been one of the protagonists of a competitive year full of emotion until the end of the season, in which he lifted the Salad Bowl with the Italian team. The world number 4 has shown on numerous occasions that he is dangerous against anyone, something he will look to maintain in 2024.

The calendar is a topic of debate on the circuit, with a unique formula for each player. Darren Cahill, one of Jannik Sinner’s coaches, talks about how they plan the calendar for next season: “In 2024 we want the same problems to be resolved: playing a lot to win a lot, stabilizing at the top. It will be in the four Grand Slams, the nine Masters 1000, the Davis Cup and the Olympic Games. There is not much room for maneuver in the programming, perhaps the details will change. He will play in Madrid and not in Barcelona. The ATP 250? They are not ruled out. They serve to manage pressure as a favorite. Every tournament is a lesson to learn from and Jannik is a sponge,” the Australian coach details to Corriere della Sera.

The last weeks of the season have been spectacular for a Sinner who appears to be a candidate for everything for 2024, also closing the year as the protagonist of the Italian trophy in the Davis Cup: “It is a very thoughtful decision that served to take Jannik to the top in Vienna, Turin and Malaga. We will make similar decisions again. He is 22 years old and we don’t want to break him. My role as the most experienced member of the team is precisely to advise him as best he can.”

With incredible duels with Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, it is tremendously difficult to choose which was the decisive match of the year for Jannik, although Darren Cahill has his clear answer: “The victory over Tsitsipas in the second round in Rotterdam. He had lost to him twice in a row, at the Australian Open and in Rome. There Jannik learned to be a smarter tennis player, the season took off: semis in Indian Wells and final in Miami,” explains the Australian.

But Sinner took the step months later: “The mental leap came in Toronto, where he did not defeat top-level players, but he was able to become a favorite along the way, absorbing increasing pressure. In Beijing, with Medvedev, he took another step forward. He stepped out of his comfort zone. That was his masterpiece, more than Djokovic in Turin or Malaga. “With Medvedev it is a chess game.”

From behind closed doors, Jannik is now a candidate for everyone to fight for that Grand Slam, although Darren confesses that his goals do not change: “We have always had long-term objectives, so nothing changes. We want to get him to play the ATP Finals as a starter, like this year, possibly improving him. The good thing about Jannik is that you don’t need to motivate him. After a loss, he is always the first to ask to return to the court to work. He is always looking for improvements: mental, physical or tactical. He puts pressure on the team. He is a polite, down-to-earth guy, he treats everyone with kindness. “I see him evolve and it is a real pleasure.”

Ready to win a Grand Slam

“He is prepared to win a Grand Slam, already in Australia. Jannik’s physique is a priority for the team. The foundation was already there thanks to working with Piatti, and he will gain more mass by taking small steps. Ligaments, joints and bones must be protected. Now he trusts his body much more, he has less pain, he knows himself better.”
