The first edition of the new in-season tournament has been completed. There is already speculation about changes to the second edition. Is the League Cup an asset for the NBA?

The Los Angeles Lakers make history as the first in-season tournament champion and celebrated last weekend with the new NBA Cup. Contrary to what was initially reported, the Lakers will also have their own banner adorning the arena for their victory in the League Cup. $500,000 in prize money went to the players’ accounts for the victory. League boss Adam Silver is hoping for even more money, as he wants to use the tournament to increase the attractiveness of the regular season.

There are already discussions as to whether the IST winner should get a permanent place in the playoffs next year in order to create even more incentive. The NBA is supposedly reacting to individual voices from players who have shown little interest in the League Cup and the prize money. The plans for a second edition are apparently already in full swing.
