Introduction to Pickleball: A New Sport for Seniors in Liège

Have you ever played pickleball? For several months, the practice of this sport from the United States has been possible every Wednesday at the Omnisport d’Angleur hall in Liège. The sessions are organized by EnéoSportthe sports association for people aged 50 and over.

Like every Wednesday for three months, time for an afternoon of discussions between seniors in the Angleur sports hall. They play pickleball, a ball game that is played, often in doubles, on a badminton court and with the rules of table tennis.

ÉnéoSport, the sports association for people aged 50 and over, has found a new activity suitable for its audience. Thanks to a ball with a more measured and slower bounce than a tennis ball, the pace of play is perhaps lower than in other racquet sports. Additionally, the size of the field does not lead to long sprints.

Launched in the 1960s in the United States, this discipline, which resembles mini-tennis, appeals to those aged 50 and over but is of course aimed at all age categories. All you need is a wooden or composite racket and a hollow plastic ball.

First in the Liège region

Thanks to ÉnéoSport, pickleball is coming to our region for the first time. Fans often say that to try it… is to adopt it!

EnéoSport offers initiations on Wednesday afternoons from 2 to 4 p.m. The next session is scheduled for January 10, 2024. There are no prerequisites and materials are available on site.

Other clubs are starting to emerge in the province of Liège, notably in Verviers. The members of Angleur are in any case ready to increase exchanges!
