Instituto Reaches South American Basketball League Finals After Defeating Caribbean Storm

Instituto tries to continue expanding its history in international basketball and this Saturday it defeated Caribbean Storm, from Colombia, 83-69, in the semifinals of the South American Basketball League, and will go for the title of the continental competition.

The top scorer of the match was Javier Saiz with 17 points; He also contributed four rebounds and an assist to his score. In the losing team, Luis Almanza added 16 points, five rebounds and three assists.

The match was played at the Palacio Peñarol stadium in Uruguay, the same venue where this Sunday the Alta Córdoba team will face Titanes de Barranquilla, starting at 9:30 p.m. (DirecTV Sports).

It was difficult for Gloria to get into the rhythm of the game, but when it did, it “smothered” its rival defensively and turned around the result that was adverse to it. With 6:35 left, Mauro Cosolito nailed a triple that put the game at 10-9 for Albirrojo and headed the result so that Victoriano’s team won the first quarter 18-11.

In the second chapter, Instituto continued to display a suffocating defense and although they lost some balls (in the first quarter they had lost 10), they did not give Caribbean Storm any room to threaten a comeback that would allow them to get closer on the scoreboard. Thus, Glory went into the long break winning by 10 points (44-34). Javier Saiz and Mauro Cosolito were the top scorers of the first half with 9 and 8 points respectively. In the Colombian team, the scoring went to Luis Almanza (14).

The third quarter was not the best performance for Instituto, they weakened in defense but improved in an aspect that had them struggling in the first two chapters: the loss of balls. The rival got within five on two occasions, but those led by Victoriano maintained the difference of 10 and took the penultimate quarter 58-48.

In the final chapter, Instituto only had to maintain its pace of play and thus stretch the difference it had practically throughout the entire match in its favor. It was a red-hot victory 83-69 and they went to the final of the competition.

The other Argentine team that qualified for the semifinals was Gimnasia y Esgrima de Comodoro Rivadavia, which in the first round this Saturday fell to the Colombian Titanes, from Barranquilla by 83-74.

The South American League is the highest basketball club tournament in South America, and second only to the League of the Americas (which brings together participants from South, Central and North America). It is organized by ABASU and FIBA Americas, after the disappearance of the South American Basketball Confederation.

The tournament has been held since 1996 and the only year in which it was not held was 2003. It is currently held in the second half of the year.

The last champion is Bauru from Brazil, who defeated San Martín de Corrientes in the 2022 final by 66 to 57.

Atenas is the top winner of this competition, with three titles (1997, 1998 and 2004).

La Gloria is going for the first international title in its history.
