Instituto Makes History: Celebrates First International Title at South American League

Institute celebrates its first international title

April 26, 1985. Inaugural date of the brand new National League. León Najnudel, the legendary creator of the competition, makes the initial jump on the Obras field, San Lorenzo and Firmat FC are playing. A few minutes before, in Bahía Blanca, Pacífico opens fire with Atenas and a few minutes later, in Córdoba, Instituto receives Sport Club. 38 years have passed and the Glory is still there, in the elite. Of course, it wasn’t always like this. The Alta Córdoba club was one of the pioneers but only lasted two seasons in the top category. In 1986 they finished second to last and went into relegation. It took him 29 years to return to the top division but when he did, it was to leave his deep mark. Since that promotion, in 2015, he did not stop his growth and ambition until this Sunday he achieved his first international title, the South American League, the second most important on the continent.

They achieved four titles, but this one transcends borders

It was in Montevideo, after beating Titanes de Barranquilla in the final, achieving the fourth star in three years – the first for an Argentine club in three years at the international level – and confirming itself as the great national team – along with Quimsa de Santiago – of these last few years. Nothing is a coincidence, everything has a reason and here you will learn the reasons for this new era, which not only refer to basketball but to the growth of a deep-rooted neighborhood institution.

Instituto recovered basketball and basketball recovered Instituto. La Gloria was part of those early days, when Najnudel convinced everyone of the need to create a federal league, throughout the country, so that the best could compete as often as possible with the best. Glory had a hard time finding its footing: it was 11th (out of 16) in the first edition, with 9 wins and 20 losses, and lost the category in 1986, after falling in 23 of the 31 games. He even lost a game due to a no-show.

Lucas Victoriano, the first in history to win the National League as a player and coach.

He clearly wasn’t up to the challenge. Between 1987 and 1990 he was in League B, trying to return to the top flight. No luck though. He also sought it in 1996, buying a place in the TNA (second division). But the experience only lasted three years, descending, in another blow to local basketball. For years his thing was to play the Córdoba tournament, always in the shadow of the rest, especially Atenas, the owner of the province and the country, the most winning and prestigious club in the history of Argentine basketball, winner of nine LNB and with decades of great results, with style and an indelible Cordoba brand.

But, little by little, the Institute resurfaced. At the worst moment, when the club owed money – there is talk of 12 million dollars – and it was difficult to put together teams to even play the local tournament, Mario Cavagliatto, the father of the current president, appeared, who refounded the club’s basketball. In 2011, the Cordoban League championship was won and that gave him the place to, in 2012, begin his journey at the national level, in the Federal Tournament. After one season, in 2013 he joined the TNA (today the Argentine League) and on May 8, 2015 he was promoted to the League, in that celebration at the Héctor Etchart de Ferro stadium. Little by little it grew in prominence. Step by step, with professionalism, seriousness and ambition.

This is how the arrivals arrived at defining instances. A dream that seemed impossible years ago. But, as often happens, before having a great time, you have to know how to suffer. Instituto lost the 2017 Super 20 final against San Martín de Corrientes. Then the same thing happened to him in the definitions of the Sudamericana in 2018 and the League in 2019, against San Lorenzo, the dominant club at that time. Defeats that served as learning to know what was missing. And feed the hunger.

In 2021 he finally got rid of the thorn by winning the Super 20 at home and nothing stopped him on the way to Glory. The long-awaited League arrived, being the first club that was able to win the decisive match of a final as a visitor, in this case in Santiago and in the last ball, no less. Then they won the 2022 Super Cup. Again against Quimsa. And now came the international conquest after beginning to be the protagonist of that scene two years ago, being champion of the South American League in an edition that did not have Brazilians among the 12 participants, but that was not at all easy to win, especially thinking about the crisis that national basketball is going through.

In the final he turned around the game that had him down by 12 after halftime, without controlling the pace of the game and shooting a very low 2-17 triples. But the defense and scoring of the foreigners Hoover (22 points, the MVP of the tournament) and Jefferson (23) appeared, with very good moments from Mauro Cosolito (16) to change the dynamics of the game. And the confidence of both teams. The victory, 81-72, was the first for an Argentine team, after the conquest of Quimsa in the 2020 League of the Americas, in the midst of the pandemic.

For Instituto it is one more step for a club that recovered, established itself in the elite – also in football – and always goes for more. With the leadership of Juan Manuel Cavagliatto from the offices, who many point to as the person most prepared for the necessary renewal of the basketball leadership at the national level. In Alta Córdoba they venerate him and some already mention him as the best president in history. Basically because he grabbed it at the worst moment and picked it up. And not only in basketball. In football he rose and established himself in First Division. And in other sports it has also improved. Not to mention how the corporate mass rose, up to 37,000, which allows it to function robustly – the last balance sheet showed a surplus of 315 million pesos – and to undertake new works, such as in the La Agustina property, where progress is being made in a major modernization of the facilities and the three-story high-performance sports center is being built for professional soccer and the entire work area for the youth teams, including the boarding house for the boys. The club also has had Physical Education teachers for almost a decade and a half and a school since 2011.

Everything comes from management, of course, although another essential part is that supported by Lucas Victoriano, the first in history to win the National League as a player and coach. The Tucumán was part of the Golden Generation, in its beginnings. Perhaps the best of that genesis, a tall, talented point guard, who was in the sights of the NBA and was even taken by Real Madrid, as the new jewel of national basketball, but his career was diluted, surely because at that time age he did not have the ambition or maturity that that explosion required, but he took note of that and as a coach he capitalized on the learning, always seeking to be ready for the new challenge.

He arrived at Instituto in June 2021, when the club was already a protagonist but needs one more step, to win. Win titles and Lucas has already achieved four, being the leader from the bench. “When we met Juan Manuel (Cavagliatto) we realized that we both had the same hunger. Or we were hunger and the desire to eat. I wanted to go for titles, the Institute was close and I couldn’t specify. Luckily this alliance gave us what we were looking for. I am very proud and so is the club. Because what we are achieving has a lot of value. It is beautiful to see how an important discipline is being put together in a football club. It is not easy, but we have made a place for ourselves and we are going down in history,” was Victoriano’s first analysis.

Lucas referred to the value of this first international conquest. Yours and the club. “It’s a revenge. For the club and for me. We had both been close, Instituto in 2018 and I, with Estudiantes de Concordia, at the time. We both had the desire to win the Sudamericana. It was an important challenge and we achieved it. Basically because we believed in it. Maybe for many people it is a surprise, because we changed the entire team from one season to the next and added several guys, without so much fame. That’s why I’m very happy. And because of how we did it, from start to finish,” he analyzed, focusing on this new team that was formed.

Mauro Cosolito celebrates with the cup.

Leandro Vildoza, the point guard, stayed to continue being the general on the field and today he shows his happiness. “I stayed because I really liked the club and its aspirations. It is a very orderly institution and when you are inside it is like living in a family. You feel at home, because they make you feel part of the club. Achieving an international title that is very difficult to achieve and that is why having achieved it is very important, especially because it is the first for me and for the club,” he highlighted.

The rest arrived to put together another winning team and are already enjoying it. Mauro Cosolito arrived to add his experience, defense and long shot, while a change of inmates was sought, the power of Taya Gallizzi left and the knowledge of the game and effectiveness of Javier Saiz arrived, in addition to the physical capacity and discipline of Roberto Acuña . Bauti Lugarini and Fede Elías, two young men on the rise on the perimeter, were also given a hint, while foreigners with no experience in the League such as Hoover (MVP of this conquest) and Jefferson were chosen. “We wanted to have a mix between young people who have already played in important instances, experienced players and foreigners who are almost new to the FIBA world. The market was not easy, it was a difficult process, but we put together a good team and we immediately realized that we had a very good group, which asked for more. Luckily we connected quickly on the defensive side, which was the key, and we improved in attack,” Lucas rescued.

Nicola Pomoli and his crazy celebration hanging from the hoop

Victoriano also showed his personal happiness. First because the effort she makes, being away from her daughter, bears fruit… Carlota, 9 years old, lives in Madrid with her mother. “Having results from the sacrifice of being away from my daughter’s daily embrace gives you strength. Carlota’s mother, who is a former player, understands the situation and I decided that this is the time to grow as a coach,” explained someone who knows that every year, with each title, he positions himself better, perhaps becoming the coach today. most important directing in our country. “I don’t really know how he positions me, but it is clear that I have my ambitions, like reaching Europe and the National Team. But first I feel like I’m preparing for when those challenges come. Someday I would like to be in both places. In the case of the national team, I have a lot of respect for the current coaching staff. I am in the process of preparing for when the chance comes,” he admitted.

Basketball, it is clear, recovered Instituto, which in basketball is marking an era while it consolidates and grows as a club. Alta Córdoba and Argentine sports, grateful.
