A few weeks ago a rumor came to light that spoke about the possibility of creating a parallel circuit to the existing ATP circuit that would include the Grand Slams and the Masters 1000. Although nothing is officially known, Taylor Fritz appears to be favor of this system.
AN IMPROVEMENT FOR THE CALENDAR
“It’s a very good idea, I think we should have separate circuits,” says Taylor Fritz, according to tennishead. “If you’re on the main circuit, the top circuit, you should be prepared to play all the big tournaments, and they should all be slightly larger draw events to get basically everyone in the top 100 involved. I think that’s honestly all we should play,” explains the American tennis player.
“You can have 14 major tournaments, and that makes tennis easier for fans to follow, because you only have to pay attention to those tournaments. There wouldn’t be people getting tons of points between other tournaments like the 250 and 500, and, above all, there isn’t a crazy schedule for us players,” says the current number 10 in the ATP Rankings.
“A more coordinated and higher quality product”
Although official sources have not communicated any intention to make these changes, Craig Tiley, director of the Australian Open, has also been in favor of this idea: “The ‘premium’ tour for the future of the sport has been on the table for quite a few years. “It is a great opportunity for tennis to offer a more coordinated and higher quality product.”
“There have been attempts to do this for years,” Craig reveals. “But the Grand Slams have worked very well in this environment. These are the times of the year when players mobilize because it is where they earn the most money, but also to achieve greater visibility worldwide.”
