Ibon Navarro: “We suffered a lot in the first half”

Ibon Navarro, coach of Unicaja, acknowledged that his team did not have a good time in the Principality. “We have arrived here with eight consecutive victories and we have suffered a lot to win the ninth,” admitted the Vitorian coach, after the tight 81-87 victory.

“We knew it was going to be a long game. I think we suffered a lot in the first half since they prepared the game very well on an offensive level to attack us and anticipate the advantages. “They passed the ball very well and found good triangulations for Marin Maric, arriving with 12 points at halftime,” he analyzed.

Navarro did not see his team comfortable. “They took away our energy and they were controlling the game well, but the truth is that they were only four or five points ahead. In the second half we were more responsible and they did not have as many advantages. With Montero’s first points it was complicated because both he and Harding are difficult players to control and that’s why we lost control of the game.”

Better after the break

His team recovered in the third quarter. “We have been finding players like Kendrick, Alberto, Kameron and Carter. We have found eight players who were well involved in the game and we have managed to close out the victory,” he said.

Questioned by journalists about MoraBanc, the team that the Vitorian coached, he considered that he does not believe that it has run out of gas. “For me it’s a question of dynamics. They have lost five in a row and when you see that it gets away from you, the nerves come and that is no longer gasoline.”

“I coach Unicaja and not MoraBanc. Natxo has the ability and experience to know what to do in these situations. Furthermore, the club is prepared for it. I believe that they are very close to winning and, if you don’t win in “It’s a league, and you always stay close, it’s complicated. My feeling is that they are getting closer,” he said.

He also spoke about his return to a city where he spent three and a half years and had his first dismissal as a professional coach. “I thought it would be more complicated and that the return and the reception would affect me. Everything has been very improvised and without stories and that helps. This is my house and when summer comes you all know that I come here with my son to see friends and his friends. Four years is a long time. I love a lot of people from here,” concluded Ibon Navarro.
