Boris Becker has been the new coach of the 20-year-old Dane Holger Rune since October. He suffered a moderate tennis crisis after the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and then made the decision to hire Becker as a new coach. The past of the German tennis legend is no longer a secret. Becker was sentenced to prison in 2022 for fraud. At the Ultimate Tennis Showdown Grand Final in London, Rune has very kind words for Becker. He also emphasized that Becker’s criminal past no longer played a role for him.

“Whatever he does off the pitch, I don’t need an opinion on it because I hired him to train me not to do anything else. He’s a really good man. I think that’s when people confuse him with that That’s totally wrong because he has a big heart and he’s a great coach.” He also added: “I know a lot of players who really like him. Me too.”

Rune: “I’m excited about the future”

The German tennis star also helped the world number eight to become mentally stronger. When the Dane, who has already won a total of four titles in his career, was asked about the reasons for his improved form, he replied: “In the end it is my own achievement. But of course he helped me a lot during this time, because I had a difficult second half of the season, so he had to come and I started to improve again.”

Novak Djokovic and Boris Becker were already a good team of players and coaches. In 2013 they both decided to work together and Djokovic won 6 Grand Slam titles in the three-year partnership and became number 1 in the world rankings again.

Even before Boris Becker started as Rune’s coach, the young Dane watched the three-time Wimbledon winner’s best moments. “Incredible tennis and [. . . ] they still play real tennis, just like you do today. They hit the ball almost like we do, only they go to the net more often and play serve and volley. But I think it’s exciting and it’s still an effective way to play.” So things seem to be progressing very harmoniously between Rune and Becker and we can look forward to the Dane’s next season.
