Aston Villa snatch a point against Liverpool, thanks to a late brace from Jhon Duran

This is a meeting which did not concern the title race, but which could influence it indirectly. This Monday evening, as part of the 37th day of the Premier League, Aston Villa snatched a draw at home against Liverpool (3-3) at the end of the match. This result consolidates the third place of the Reds, but also the fourth of the Villans, which is similar to the last qualifying seat for the Champions League.

Thus, Unai Emery’s players only need a draw in their last meeting of the season, at Crystal Palace, to be certain of playing in the C1 next season, while Tottenham, fifth, is now five points behind and benefits from a very favorable goal difference compared to Villa (+12 against +20).

Martinez unhappy then decisive

Far from its accounting considerations, Aston Villa and Liverpool offered an unbridled match, rich in opportunities (33 shots in all) which began with a huge blunder from Emiliano Martinez. The Argentine goalkeeper, author of a remarkable season, in fact, in the second minute, diverted into his own goals, in two stages, a cross from Harvey Eliott deflected at the near post by Pau Torres (0-1, 2nd ).

To a lesser extent, the Villa goalkeeper is also at fault on the second achievement of the Reds, signed Cody Gakpo on a service from Joe Gomez, since he came out badly in the action (0-2, 23rd). On the other hand, he could do nothing about the last Liverpool goal, on a high-altitude header from Jarrell Quansah, following a long free kick from Harvey Eliott (1-3, 48th). It should be noted that Martinez then made several saves (including a spectacular one against Alexander-Arnold in the 83rd minute), which allowed his teammates to stay alive in this lively game.

Because Aston Villa never gave up, coming back for the first time thanks to a right shot from Youri Tielemans, who took advantage of a caviar from the inevitable Ollie Watkins (1-1, 12th). Then, at the end of the match, under the impetus of a lively public, and a very energetic Emery at the edge of the field, it was the Colombian Jhon Duran, who entered in the 79th minute, who allowed his team to equalize, first by taking advantage of a ball lost in front of his surface by Alexis Mac Allister (2-3, 85th), then by involuntarily deflecting a powerful deep ball from Moussa Diaby (3-3, 88th). The explosive conclusion to a confusing match.
