Gennaro Gattuso’s Tactical Switch Pays Off Against Lyon

Gennaro Gattuso changed his tactical setup on Wednesday against OL (3-0) by switching to a three-way defense which initially did not appeal to his players.

A tactical move that pays off. Gennaro Gattuso had changed his plans a little for the reception of Lyon (3-0), Wednesday in a late match of the 10th day of Ligue 1. Accustomed to a four-man defense, this time he opted for a three-central hinge and two more offensive full-backs, while combining Vitinha and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. And it worked perfectly despite some reluctance among his players when he explained his plans to them during the week.

“I had the impression that the players were not convinced”

Gattuso explains, however, that this new provision will not necessarily be used in every match from now on.

“If I were certain of winning all the matches with a 3-man defense I would use this system every time but we will see depending on the opponents,” he explained after the match. “The preparation was not easy, I had the impression that the players were not convinced by the game system but we worked on it for two days, we studied OL well. We insisted on that and finally we were rewarded.”

Against OL, OM signed a third consecutive victory in all competitions and placed themselves more solidly in the first part of the table, in 7th place, six points behind Lille, 4th.

“Tonight I really liked our state of mind, our will,” added Gattuso. “What is important is to put the players in good conditions. I am very happy with the attitude of my team. We are going to play a lot of matches in a few days so what is important is to recover well and to always give your best in future meetings.”
