Gattuso “very angry” despite victory in Lorient

The Marseille coach looked back on his team’s victory this Sunday evening in Lorient (4-2).

Despite the victory (4-2) in Lorient, Sunday, for the 15th day of Ligue 1, Marseille coach Gennaro Gattuso said he was “very annoyed” by the second half of his players who did not control enough to his taste.

“I am very happy with the victory but I am very angry, very upset because of the development of the meeting,” proclaimed the Italian after the match. “We saw a great team in the first half, but in the second we didn’t do enough. In football, you have to control your matches and that has become a bit of our fault,” he lamented.

Arranged in 3-5-2, and well helped by the passivity of the Lorient defense, Marseille delivered an offensive recital during the first 45 minutes and could have reached the locker room “at 7-1” and not 4-1, judged the coach.

“Already, I was not happy with the goal we conceded at 3-0. We concede it in a much too passive way,” he stressed. He had also thrown his parka on the pitch in anger at that time (41st). “I am well placed to talk about these things because I lost a Champions League final against Liverpool after leading 3-0 at half-time” in 2005, he recalled.

“I told them at half-time to be careful, to continue,” but despite this warning, “there was a little bit of selfishness, a little less effort, that’s where we sinned,” judged Gattuso. “In football, you can’t laugh or rest on your laurels. I believe in the god of football and just for that, you have to stay serious,” continued the coach. However, he gave satisfaction to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, author of two goals, bringing his total to seven in the last four matches. “You know, in my career and as a coach, I have come across a lot of players and I can tell you that he is a true professional,” explained the Italian, praising the work of the Gabonese.

“I told him that his moment would come and his moment has come, we are seeing the real Pierre-Emerick and I think it could not be otherwise,” he concluded.
