Frankfurt am Main: Charges against 17-year-old after fatal brawl at soccer tournament

After a fatal punch against a 15-year-old soccer player from Berlin, the Frankfurt public prosecutor’s office has brought charges against a now 17-year-old player from the French club FC Metz. The accusation against the young person is two cases of bodily harm, one of which resulted in death, as senior public prosecutor Diana Reichmann announced on Friday. The altercation occurred during an international youth tournament on Whit Sunday (May 28) this year on a sports field in Frankfurt-Eckenheim.

According to the prosecution, after the final whistle of the game there was a fight between the French and German players on the pitch. First, the accused is said to have hit another player. A short time later, according to the prosecution, he hit the 15-year-old from JFC Berlin in the neck, which, among other things, injured an artery.

According to police reports, the beating caused “serious, life-threatening head injuries.” A day later, the victim was diagnosed as brain dead in the clinic. The suspected thug was already in custody at the time. According to Reichmann, the victim’s death was due to the attacker’s negligence.

The trial will be heard in one of the juvenile criminal chambers of the Frankfurt Regional Court. Trial dates have not yet been set.
