Marc-André ter Stegen has to cope with a bitter setback in the fight for the regular place in the German goal. The national goalkeeper has to undergo surgery due to persistent back problems. Ter Stegen comments on the month-long absence.
The football year is over for Marc-André ter Stegen. What the Spanish newspaper “Sport”, which is very close to FC Barcelona, had already reported yesterday is now official. The Catalans goalkeeper needs back surgery. Barcelona announced this in a statement on Tuesday evening.
“First team player Marc ter Stegen will undergo surgery this week to correct his lower back problems. There will be a new statement after the procedure,” said FC Barcelona on the health of its goalkeeper. According to media reports, the downtime could be several months.
Most recently, ter Stegen had to miss out on appearances in the Primera Division and with the German national team due to his persistent back problems. He was not present in the DFB team’s two friendly games against Turkey (2:3) and Austria (0:2). “He has some problems and can’t do his exercises properly,” Barcelona coach Xavi recently said about his goalkeeper.

Ter Stegen spoke out on “X” (formerly Twitter) shortly after his club’s announcement. “After intensive discussions with the club’s medical team and various supporting experts, we decided on a surgical procedure. Of course the break annoys me. It is the right and safe decision to come back under the best conditions for my club and the national team,” wrote the 31-year-old.

For ter Stegen, the long forced break worsens the prospects in the fight for the goalkeeper position at the 2024 European Championship. Manuel Neuer, 37, is back in strong form after his serious injury, which was also registered by the DFB. Neuer now has a good chance of being between the posts again in the friendly games against the Netherlands and France in March.
