Football: deprived of a record with Atlético de Madrid, Antoine Griezmann looks grim

With his head lowered, his expression disillusioned and his gaze dark, Antoine Griezmann left the field frustrated on Saturday during the reception of Sevilla. The French striker had the opportunity to beat Luis Aragonés’ goal record with the rojiblanco jersey. Last Tuesday, “Grizou” equaled the Madrid legend by scoring his 172nd and 173rd goals for the Colchoneros, against Getafe (3-3).

The vice world champion, third best scorer in La Liga with 11 goals, did not achieve his goal. The number 7 even ended the year quite annoyed after his replacement in the 73rd minute. Atlético then led 1-0 and Turk Çağlar Söyüncü had just received a red card. The Madrid coach, Diego Simeone, therefore took his star off the field to maintain the defensive balance and bring in the former Lille player Reinildo.

Approved by the audience at the Metropolitano, Antoine Griezmann nevertheless showed a crestfallen expression when he left. Disappointed not to become the top scorer in Madrid history in front of his home crowd, the Frenchman had nevertheless prepared everything. When he arrived at the stadium, he wore a jersey bearing the image of Luis Aragonés. The Spaniard, who died in 2014, arrived at Atlético de Madrid in 1964, before ending his career there ten years later.

Antoine Griezmann will have to wait until January 3 and the trip to Girona, second in the championship, to score again. Despite the Frenchman’s disappointment, his team can be satisfied with finishing the year on the podium, just ahead of FC Barcelona.
