First big challenge as head coach: Club assistant Rik De Mil must get Westerlo out of the doldrums | Jupiler Pro League

Rik De Mil had already had a taste of the real work as a head coach for three months.

Last year, the 42-year-old Belgian had to guide Club Brugge through the play-offs after a turbulent season with two coaching changes. This summer, De Mil took a seat on the Brugge bench again, as an assistant under Ronny Deila.

He will now leave the familiar nest before New Year’s Eve. De Mil chooses the assignment to save Westerlo from relegation and signed a 2.5-year contract.

With 14 out of 51, the Kempen team is in 14th place – and therefore also a relegation place – in the Jupiler Pro League.

A conscious choice by De Mil, who also ignored an offer from red lantern KV Kortrijk. Westerlo still has to pay compensation to Club, because the assistant coach was still under contract there.

Westerlo is over the moon with his new coach.

“De Mil has already shown his coaching qualities at Club Brugge and well-known faces such as Thomas Van den Keybus and Maxim De Cuyper learned the tricks of the trade under him,” writes the Kempen club.

“That combination makes De Mil the ideal coach for Westerlo. With his skills and knowledge he can help further develop our young talents.”

“With his attractive playing style, De Mil can allow Westerlo’s DNA to flourish.”
