FIA does not yet know anything about the Madrid Grand Prix: “The first step has not yet been taken”

While it was recently reported that the Madrid Grand Prix in 2026 would almost be a certainty, the FIA reveals that the organization may have counted itself rich a little too early. The process of even bringing the race to the Spanish capital appears not to have even started yet.

At the beginning of December, the Spanish Okdiario reported that Madrid would be in the final phase of the Formula 1 project and that racing could take place from 2026. It was also announced that a night race was aimed for, but the organization’s preference would be an afternoon race. A layout had even already been completed, with the track being located around the IFEMA Convention Center.

Madrid Grand Prix still in its early stages

Speaking to Motorsport.com, FIA Senate President Carmelo Sanz de Barros explains the situation. “A race in Madrid is the wish of many. However, it is a process, a clear process that must be gone through to accommodate a Grand Prix. And I don’t think that process has been followed and all steps have been completed, contrary to what is all written.” De Barros therefore points to the steps that the Madrid organization still has to take. “When someone wants to organize a new race in a country, you go there. Has the Spanish federation analyzed this project? No, they haven’t seen it yet. And the Spanish president of the motorsport federation is the Vice President of Motorsport Europe at the FIA. So this first step has not yet been taken.”

FIA is waiting for request

The ball still has to start rolling and the organization must first get the Spanish federation on its side and then submit an application to the FIA. “No one is working yet on this project that has been circulating in the press for days. Perhaps they started building this house from the roof. I’m not saying it won’t happen, I’m just saying that at the moment the Spanish Motorsport Federation , nor the FIA, has received any documents about this project. The day something comes in, we will study it.”
