Feijóo demonstrates in Pamplona with UPN and Vox against the “miserable” pact of the PSOE with EH Bildu

PP offensive against Sánchez

The popular leader opens the door to a motion of no confidence against Pedro Sánchez “if the legislature collapses”

MADRID “It is false to say that Pamplona will have a progressive mayor. Pamplona will have a reactionary mayor.” This is how the popular leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has condemned the agreement announced on Wednesday between PSOE and EH Bildu to wrest power from Navarre’s town council (UPN). “It’s an indignity and a misery,” Feijóo expressed in statements to the media, just before the demonstration called this Sunday in Pamplona against the pact between the socialists from Navarre and the Abertzales. The call, which has brought together around 10,000 people according to the first figures from the Spanish government delegation in Navarre, has also been flagged by UPN and Vox.

Following the harsh tone of the last few days, Feijóo has reprimanded the PSOE that its move means “destroying everything that has been done in recent years in Spain in the fight against terrorism”. “The PSOE is losing its dignity and its memory. [Jo] would be unable to give a political party that has murdered my colleagues the mayorship of the capital of Navarre”, said Feijóo in reference to EH Bildu. A statement that replicates the most reactionary speech used by the PP and, in particular , by figures such as the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, during the municipal election campaign, when Ayuso equated EH Bildu with ETA – she announced its dissolution in May 2018 – However, and especially after the agreement between PSOE and Junts is not the first time that the popular leader has raised the tone in this way.

This Wednesday, an agreement was sealed between the PSOE and EH Bildu that was not possible half a year ago, right after the elections of 28-M. Navarrese and Abertzale socialists have agreed on a motion of no confidence that will now give the mayorship to EH Bildu’s candidate, Joseba Asiron, the second most voted candidate behind Cristina Ibarrola, from Unió del Poble Navarrès (UPN) . The motion will be debated next Thursday, December 28 and, a priori, will go ahead thanks to a progressive majority, which adds up to sixteen councilors, two above the absolute majority: eight from EH Bildu, five from Navarre’s socialists, two from Geroa Bai and one of With Tu-Zurekin.

“I’m sorry that once again, in this wall that you are building [Pedro] Sánchez, put another ingot to divide and separate constitutional Spain and, in this case, use Navarre for your wall. Neither the people of Navarre nor this city of Pamplona deserve it”, said Feijóo, who wanted to show “all the support” to the still mayor of UPN, Cristina Ibarrola, who will have to say goodbye to the council before end of the year. Feijóo has taken advantage of the agreement to reprimand the socialists that while the PP “is being asked to support the PSOE to prevent a government of EH Bildu in Vitoria, or of the independentists in Barcelona, now the socialist party it gives a government to a political brand that is pro-independence and, what’s worse, a political brand inherited from terrorists,” reiterated Feijóo.

In the same line, the president of UPN, Javier Esparza, has spoken, who has assured that Pedro Sánchez “will hand over Pamplona to Abertzale fascism”. “We will work from now on to recover the mayor’s office,” said Esparza. The extreme right of Vox has also stuck to this speech: “ETA will govern in Pamplona with the votes of the PSOE”, said the member of Vox, Juan García-Gallardo.

Sánchez – Feijóo meeting

This demonstration in Pamplona arrives at the gates of a possible meeting between the president of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, and the leader of the popular. In fact, this Monday expires the first date that the PSOE proposed to Alberto Núñez Feijóo to celebrate this meeting. For now, the PP has not made a statement on whether or not it will finally accept the meeting, which socialist sources call a “serious and unprecedented event”. “[Alberto Núñez Feijóo] he remains silent and letting the days pass by avoiding the appointment”, criticize the same sources.

In fact, this Sunday Feijóo has opened the door to a step that is rather the opposite of any kind of rapprochement. In an interview with The Basque Journal, the popular leader has stated that “if the legislature collapses” a motion of censure against Pedro Sánchez would be considered. The Galician was asked about this issue before the demonstration, but he threw balls out: “If I consider that at some point in the legislature no further step can be taken other than presenting a motion of censure, of course that the I will present, regardless of what comes out or not,” he said.

Sánchez’s intention in this meeting is to address the renewal of the General Council of the Judiciary, whose mandate has expired five years ago, a reform of regional funding or the elimination of the term “diminished” from the Constitution, an initiative that has already it was wrecked at the time, just like the rest of the proposals.
