Everton and Liverpool Fans Unite Against Food Poverty with Fans Supporting Foodbanks Initiative

“Yesterday and always, we stand united with Fans Supporting Foodbanks in the fight against food poverty across the country,” Everton said in a statement on Monday. During the home victory against Chelsea on Sunday (2-0), chants mocking “food poverty in the city of Liverpool” were heard at Goodison Park.

For years, Everton and Liverpool fans have been the target of insulting chants from opposing supporters, including Feed the Scousers and Sign On, which refers to the claim for unemployment benefits, mocking unemployment which is rife in the region.

“As these chants rang out, the club, united in its stance, promoted the Fans Supporting Foodbanks logo on the stadium’s giant screen. The association and its essential purple vehicle will be present in the Goodison Park Fan Zone throughout the season, on match days,” the club announced in a press release.

An initiative from Everton and Liverpool supporters

The initiative, founded jointly by Liverpool and Everton fans in 2015 to tackle the problem, has since been featured on match days across Britain.

The club encouraged fans to donate non-perishable food and dry goods to support the initiative on December 19, for Everton’s final home game before Christmas against Fulham: “If every supporter showed up with just one box of canned, I can guarantee you that no child would go to bed hungry on Merseyside that night,” said Dave Kelly, chairman of Fans Supporting Foodbanks.
