Espanyol doesn’t like Fridays. A win in four games. Or, rather, the white-and-blues are losing more than half of the matches they play during the week: they add up to 41.6% of the points when they play between Monday and Friday, and 70% when the matches are saturdays or sundays In Oviedo (2-0), the umpteenth game, Luis Miguel Ramis suffered his first defeat at the head of the Spanish bench. A footballing step back that comes in full revival in terms of results and sensations of a Spanish team that, in the worst case scenario, could end the day four points from the direct promotion zone.

If Espanyol haven’t won at home for two months, however, it’s not because they play away from home on weekends, but because of the poor footballing proposition they present. Too poor a game. At Carlos Tartiere, the white-and-blues missed an Álvaro Aguado who has become an essential piece in midfield. Ramis opted for a more cautious starting eleven, with Keidi Bare alongside Gragera, but the proposal did not work. Oviedo, more intense, blew the ball away from a surprisingly soft Espanyol in the duels that moved away from the aggressive team that had been in the last days. The Asturians enjoyed running back a Spaniard who suffered in transitions. Thus they opened the can, in a vertical transition that Masca culminated with his head.

Ramis, seeing that his team had no ideas or precision and was abusing long runs, brought on Aguado in a double change at half-time. The entrance of the Andalusian midfielder sped up the pulsations of Espanyol, who began to gain meters with the ball at their feet, but barely intimidated Leo Román. The best chances of the second half, in fact, went to Oviedo, who were not satisfied with the slightest advantage and ended up finishing the game in the final stretch.

Espanyol’s reaction was half-hearted and insufficient. The white-and-blues did not know how to put against the ropes an Oviedo that, moreover, had been loaded during the first half with a good handful of yellow cards. The rushes of the final stretch multiplied the number of inaccuracies in attack. The excessive dependence of the white-and-blues on Aguado, the only minimally inspired player, made it easier for the home team, which was content not to give up the ball. The next meeting, against Zaragoza, will also be on Friday. Surely, with Aguado back to eleven. It’s better for Espanyol to be like that.
