Emma Raducanu’s Possible Comeback in the Australian Summer: A Look at Her Path to the 2024 Australian Open

Gives Emma Raducanu their comeback in the Australian summer? It’s quite possible that she will have to go through qualifying at the Australian Open (from January 14th) – which would actually be a good omen.

In principle, the best 104 players in Grand Slam tournaments are qualified for the main draw (the remaining 24 places go to qualifiers and wildcard players); Deadline: Monday six weeks before the start of the tournament. So: the past one.

But: Injured players with a correspondingly good protected ranking are also entitled to direct participation, which always pushes the actual cut-off (place 104) a little higher.

Australian Open 2024: Kerber, Osaka, Brady wohl am Start

For the women, Jennifer Brady (PR 14), Angelique Kerber (PR 31), Ajla Tomljanovic (PR 33), Naomi Osaka (PR 46), Shelby Rogers (PR 51), Amanda Anisimova (PR 61), Caty McNally (PR 71), Aleksandra Krunic (PR 99), Emma Raducanu (PR 103), Su-Wei Hsieh (PR 106) and Ysaline Bonaventure (PR 109) asked for permission to play via the Protected Ranking.

So there are seven players below, who would narrow the cut-off to 97th place (104 – 7). However: Belinda Bencic is out due to pregnancy, according to the Canadian website opencourt.ca Bianca Andreescu doesn’t seem to be running either. Makes a current cut-off of 99th place (97 + 2).

Emma Raducanu and the US Open 2021

Which in turn would mean: According to the current status, Emma Raducanu, with her protected ranking of 103rd place, would have to qualify – unless four more players canceled or Raducanu received a wildcard.

Will the Brit even start in Melbourne? Still seems questionable anyway: Raducanu is still in comeback training after her operations, but is aiming to return to Australia.

And as we know, she is most dangerous when it comes to qualifying: in 2021 she sensationally won the US Open!
