Havana: Judo turned out to be one of the most outstanding sports in our country during 2023. The 9 titles in the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador and the 6 in the Pan American Games in Santiago demonstrate this.

This discipline managed to include 2 athletes in the list of the 10 best athletes of the year in Cuba, these are the cases of heavyweights Idalys Ortiz and Andy Granda. There are currently 5 members of this martial art in the qualification zone for the Paris Olympic Games.

Rafael Manso, President of the Cuban Judo Federation, commented that they were able to comply with the planned critical path, closing with the Grand Slam in Tokyo, Japan, the last event of the year that gave points for the Olympic ranking.

“We comply one hundred percent, we attend almost all the competitions that award points for Olympic classification. In addition, we had excellent performances in the three multi-sport events of the year, the ALBA Games, the Central American Games and the Pan American Games.”

Manso announced that after January 20, the Cuban judokas will go to Europe to prepare. “On January 22, the men leave for Hungary and the women for France, it will be for a period of about three months and they will move on to the Grand Slam in Paris, Portugal, among other tournaments.”

Unlike other sports, Judo needs to compete as much as possible, because qualification for multiple events is through ranking. “This forces us to participate in most of the events, unlike another discipline that goes to a pre-Olympic and can already get the ticket.”

Cuba intends to attend the Paris Olympic Games with 7 judokas, which will be the fundamental competition of 2024. “Today we have in the qualification zone Andy Granda (+100 Kg), Iván Silva (90 Kg), Idalys Ortiz (+78 Kg ), Maylin del Toro (63 Kg) and Magdiel Estrada (73 Kg) with the continental quota. Orlando Polanco (66 Kg) and Idelamnys Gómez (70 Kg) should complete this group.”

The National Judo Commissioner stated that the star Idalys Ortiz will seek her 5th medal in the Olympic Games in the French capital. “She is a very disciplined athlete, she has set her sights on being on the podium at the Olympic Games, but for that we have to support her and guarantee her everything she needs so that she can prepare well.”

Judo was another of the sports that could not hold its national championship in 2023. “We could not hold it due to the situation that everyone knows, but this year we intend to hold it in Pinar del Río for both sexes in the month of May. as well as the events of the different categories.”

One of the novelties of Judo in 2023 was the holding of the Varadero Pan American Open, which brought together several of the continent’s main figures. “There was competition from the children’s categories to the master’s category. It is an event that is here to stay and was well received at the International Hotel. By 2024 we hope to grow in terms of participants, especially among the Seniors.”

The Cuban judokas fulfilled during 2023, with the contribution of 9 titles in the Central American and Caribbean Games in San Salvador and 6 in the Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile, the two fundamental competitions of the year of our sports movement.
