Concerns Mount Over Health of ‘Emperor’ Franz Beckenbauer as Brother Speaks Out in New Documentary

Continuing concerns about the health of “Emperor” Franz Beckenbauer (78).

Brother Walter Beckenbauer talks about the current situation of the Bayern legend in the new ARD documentary “Beckenbauer”. The approximately 90-minute program will be broadcast on Erste on January 8th from 8:15 p.m. and can be seen in the ARD media library from January 2nd.

Walter Beckenbauer: “If I said now that he is fine, then I would be lying, and I don’t like lying. He does not feel good. It’s a constant up and down.”

His brother Franz has largely withdrawn from the public eye in recent years and lives in Austria.

In August, record national player Lothar Matthäus (62, 150 appearances) and coaching legend Christoph Daum (70) expressed concern about Beckenbauer’s current state of health.

Lothar on RTL about Beckenbauer: “We wish him all the health, that he becomes his old self again, with his energy. Of course we hope that he gets better again. Franz always said that health is the most important thing in life. He doesn’t have that at the moment.”

Matthäus continued: “His health is not going well. Of course we hope that things go in the other direction.”

Daum is always in contact with Beckenbauer’s wife Heidi and exchanges ideas with her. Daum on RTL: “She then gives me feedback on how Franz is doing.” His goal: to visit Beckenbauer in Salzburg.

The former Bundesliga coach emphasizes: “I want to give Franz this support, this encouragement, which is actually very good for me, to say to him: Your clock hasn’t run out yet. We still need you.”

Beckenbauer has been plagued by health problems for some time. In an interview with the magazine “Bunte” in 2022, he revealed: “I had a so-called ocular infarction in one eye. Unfortunately I can’t see anything on the right anymore. I can handle that. And I have to be careful with my heart.”

Beckenbauer himself does not make any current statements in the new ARD documentary. Many of the German world champions’ companions from 1974 (player) and 1990 (coach) speak for this.

In addition to the sporting success story as a player and as a coach, the film is also about the private individual Beckenbauer and the allegations of bribery in his role as a FIFA official and as the organizer of the 2006 World Cup. The proceedings were discontinued in 2021 due to the statute of limitations.

Former Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer (The Greens) and former Federal Interior Minister Otto Schily (SPD) defend Beckenbauer in the documentary and demand leniency.

Fischer: “The Germans wanted the World Cup, including myself, and we were happy that we had Franz Beckenbauer. In this respect, it is also hypocrisy to a certain extent. We would also have to blame ourselves.”

Schily: “It wasn’t fair the way he was treated. And that is very bitter for him. I think he felt that very painfully. He didn’t have a tank at that point either. It got very close to him.”
