City Outbids Long-time Club Members to Purchase TC Laiz Tennis Facility

The TC Laiz tennis facility is not being sold to two long-time club members. As the club confirmed upon request, the two interested parties have withdrawn their offer. The reason: After learning about the purchase intentions, the city made its own offer. The two club members then renounced the purchase in favor of the city, and the property transaction is scheduled to be completed in January.

If TC Laiz flourishes again, it can use the site as long as it wants.

Manfred Storrer

The city’s first alderman Manfred Storrer and mayor Wolfgang Querner were visitors to the extraordinary general meeting at the end of November when the modalities of the sale were discussed. Due to declining membership numbers, costs exceed income, which is why the club is threatened with insolvency and was looking for a buyer for the 5,000 square meter site with the clubhouse and the four tennis courts. The remaining debts are to be paid off with the purchase price.

City changes its mind

The city originally declined to purchase the site because it didn’t want to set a precedent. Storrer explains the surprising turnaround with the minimum bid called at the general meeting and the purchasing intentions of two club members. “We want to secure the property for the purposes of the city.” Storrer believes that residential development in this area is unthinkable. Rather, it is about a public, charitable interest.

Mayor can decide alone

According to information from our newspaper, the city will take over the property for a mid-five-figure sum. In real estate transactions of this size, the decision rests with the mayor; However, the parliamentary group spokespersons of the local council were involved, explains Marcus Ehm’s deputy.

That’s what the tennis club says

On behalf of the tennis club, deputy chairman Gert Jarre says: “We welcome the fact that the city has made an offer – especially since it was higher than the previous one.” The tennis club now wants to enter into negotiations with the city about the division of the running costs. When the decision was announced at the most recent local council meeting, the city said this: It would buy the site and make it available to the club, but it did not intend to invest.

According to Storrer, the city has no interest in using the site itself. “If TC Laiz flourishes again, it can use the site as long as it wants.” For a symbolic rent of 150 euros annually, TC Laiz can use the site – as long as it wants.
