Chiba Keizai University Advances to Second Round in National High School Basketball Championship Winter Cup 2023

The 76th National High School Basketball Championship (Winter Cup 2023) began on the 23rd at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium (Shibuya-ku, Tokyo), with first-round matches for both boys and girls. The women’s Chiba Keio University defeated Seika Joshi (Fukuoka) and decided to advance to the second round.

In this summer’s competition between the top eight high school students overall, the best card in the first round went to Chiba Keizai University.

Chiba Keizai University had an advantage in the match as the five players on the court ran freely from the start. Captain Kakuyo Nata (3rd year), who was also selected for the U18 Japan National Team, led the way with 19 points, and vice-captain Ayaka Sakaguchi (3rd year) led the way with 18 points. The team as a whole shot well on fast breaks and from mid-range, with a success rate of 48.4% on 2-point shots. He showed his opponent the difference in strength.

Ichiritsu Funabashi, participating for the first time in 27 years, allowed a comeback in the final stages and unfortunately lost by one point. The boys’ Narashino team also failed to make it past the first round. (Kiyomi Ishii)
