LAS VEGAS – In a season marked by the use of reserve quarterbacks in the NFL, the Los Angeles Chargers will travel to Las Vegas with their number 2 quarterback, while the Raiders will again call on a rookie or will turn again to Jimmy Garoppolo, starter turned backup.
Easton Stick, selected in the fifth round in 2019, will start Thursday’s match between the two clubs in place of Justin Herbert. The latter suffered a finger injury that ended his season on Sunday against the Denver Broncos.
The Raiders, for their part, could continue with Aidan O’Connell, drafted in the fourth round this year. The rookie started the season on the bench before becoming the starting quarterback for the final five games.
Stick showed some good things Sunday by completing 13 of 24 passes for 179 yards against the Broncos.
“Our players have a lot of confidence in Easton,” Chargers head coach Brandon Staley said. I think the way he played in the second half gave us confidence in his game.”
Video footage of Stick in action is otherwise sparse, which could give the Chargers an advantage.
“I just have to get a feel for his play during the game,” Raiders cornerback Nate Hobbs said of Stick. You can’t panic or that sort of thing. You have to go out on the field and play football. »
As for the Raiders, interim head coach Antonio Pierce said he would evaluate the quarterback situation within his club. O’Connell was the one who spoke to reporters Tuesday, suggesting he will be the starter again.
“I never said Aidan isn’t the starter,” Pierce said Wednesday morning. We are still in evaluation. If there is a chance to improve, to put ourselves in a position to win, then we have to consider all factors. »
