Cava breaks a new sales record

Barcelona Denomination of Origin (DO) Cava wineries have broken a new sales record between January and September this year, mainly due to the push represented by the Spanish market. The sector also hopes to have a “good” Christmas campaign, along the lines of last year, and close 2023 by exceeding the figure of 250 million bottles sold, as explained this Wednesday by the president of the DO , Javier Pagés.

Sales increased by 2.35% in the first nine months of the year compared to the same period in 2022. The increase is mainly due to the good progress of sales in Spain, where in September they had sold 7.65% more bottles than a year earlier, while exports remained almost flat, up slightly by 0.33%. In this sense, Pagés has pointed out that “consumption is pushing up” sales in the State, especially “restaurants, hospitality and tourism”, which have also broken records this year.

Growth rates are “not far off” from those of 2022, when it closed the third quarter with an increase of 3.3%, according to the president of the denomination. Pagés is optimistic about the Christmas campaign, when the sector has the most important sales peak of the year coinciding with the holidays, and is confident that it will follow the line of last year, when the expectations of the producers were met does sales Thus Pagés considers it feasible to close the year exceeding the 249 million bottles that were placed on the market last year.

Pagés highlighted the “commitment” to increase “the quality and prestige” of DO sparkling wines, with the aim of “creating more value in the entire chain of the sector”. However, the two highest quality cava ranges – with more demands on producers in the production process –, cava reserva and grand reserva or parage cavas, recorded a drop in the number of bottles sold, of 18% and 1.7%, respectively. Conversely, the largest segment, cava guarda, is the one that increases the most.

The DO will provide billing data in millions of euros once the financial year closes, starting in January. In total, the DO Cava brings together 349 wineries from various regions throughout Spain – a large part Catalan – with 38,000 hectares of vines, where approximately 6,200 winegrowers work.

Germany again leads abroad

In the foreign market – which represents seven out of ten bottles sold – Germany grew in sales by 1.27%. In terms of volume, it is followed by Belgium, where the increase in bottles sold was 1.9%, and the United Kingdom, with a strong increase of 19.3%, caused mainly by a reorganization of stocks after some years with lower sales. Even within Europe, Poland, France, the Netherlands and Sweden also recorded increases, while outside the Old Continent, Brazil grew by a remarkable 76.2%.
