Magnus Carlsen won the World Rapid Chess Championship in Uzbekistan for the fifth time. The 33-year-old Norwegian scored ten points in the three-day, 13-round tournament in Samarkand and remained unbeaten (seven wins, six draws). Silver went to Vladimir Fedoseyev, who competed for Slovenia, and bronze went to Yu Yangyi from China. No Austrians took part in the tournament.

The Uzbek city will also host the World Blitz Chess Championship in the next two days. Carlsen, who has been leading the world chess rankings without interruption since July 2011, will also start as favorite there.
