Public nominations are now open for the upcoming class of the California High School Football Hall of Fame, a Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation project established in August in collaboration with the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF), the National Football Foundation (NFF), College Football Hall of Fame, Pro Football Hall of Fame, and the Rose Bowl Stadium.
The Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation said nominations can be submitted on the Hall of Fame’s website, www.CAHighSchoolFootballHOF.com, until Dec. 30.
The selection committee will assess the nominations and announce the second class of inductees in Spring 2024.
A Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation statement said the award aims to celebrate the history, excellence, and overall influence of players, coaches, and significant moments in California high school football. The Hall, which was dedicated during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Aug. 26, is open to all ticketed patrons on UCLA game days and visitors through the Stadium’s official tour program, making it the first of its kind in the state.
“It truly is an honor for the Rose Bowl Stadium to serve as the home to the California High School Football Hall of Fame,” said Brian Brantley, Vice President for Advancement at Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation. ”We are excited to announce the public call for nominations to the next class of California High School Football Hall of Fame members. We hope that this recognition of these athletes, coaches, and administrators continues to inspire to greatness for the next generation on and off the playing field.”
The selection committee, representing all 10 CIF state sections, will follow the inaugural class of 100 players and 13 coaches selected in 2022. The next classes, anticipated every two years, are expected to include six to 12 inductees.
According to the criteria for nomination and selection, players must have graduated from a California high school and played high school football during their final interscholastic year, with eligibility beginning 10 years after graduation.
Coaches must have served as a head coach for at least 10 years and managed a minimum of 100 games in California, with immediate eligibility upon retirement.
“The CIF was honored to be a part of the selection process for the inaugural class for the California High School Football Hall of Fame at the Rose Bowl,” Ron Nocetti, Executive Director of the California Interscholastic Federation, said. “We look forward to our continued involvement with the Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation in selecting the second group of incredible people to be inducted into this Hall of Fame.”
The Hall of Fame was established as a result of two leadership pledges from prominent philanthropists and business leaders Brian Panish and Mickey Segal, along with Brian Kennedy, ensuring the enduring impact of the project.
“This project appropriately recognizes the players, coaches, administrators, and so many more contributors that have positively shaped the lives of so many on the football field during the formative high school years,” Panish and Segal said in a joint statement about the project. “Understanding the Rose Bowl Stadium’s rich history and experience with generational moments rooted in football, there is no better place in the State of California to house the High School Football Hall of Fame.”
The Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation was formed in 2010 to preserve, protect and enhance the Rose Bowl Stadium’s future by providing private funding in support of improvements within the venue and its surrounding areas.
