Bouna Sarr Suffers Torn ACL: Long-Term Absence for FC Bayern Munich

FC Bayern Munich will have to be without Bouna Sarr for a long time. As the record champions announced, the Senegalese suffered a torn cruciate ligament.

He is facing a forced break of months: Bouna Sarr. IMAGO/Lackovic

“Bouna Sarr suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during training. The Senegalese full-back underwent successful surgery on Friday and will therefore be out for the next few months,” the Munich club said in a statement.

The defender’s loss shouldn’t have much of a sporting impact for coach Thomas Tuchel, as the 31-year-old didn’t play a big role at Bayern anyway. In the current season he has only appeared five times across all competitions, including three times as a substitute and only twice in the starting line-up: in the Bundesliga in a 4-2 win against Heidenheim (kicker rating 3.0) and in the sensational 1-2 cup defeat at 1. FC Saarbrücken.

Sarr signed a four-year contract with FC Bayern in autumn 2020, but was then unable to assert himself at Säbener Straße. There are just 16 Bundesliga games on his resume – and this season, his fourth and almost certainly last year of his contract, the Senegalese international (13 international games) shouldn’t actually play any role.

But because there was no buyer for the right-back and FC Bayern had to complain about a few injury-related absences in the autumn, Tuchel ultimately fell back on Sarr, including in Mainz (1:3). No more minutes will be added in the coming months, and the Africa Cup from January 13th to February 11th, 2024 in Ivory Coast is now a thing of the past for Sarr.

In any case, it was unclear whether Sarr, who won the title with Senegal in 2022 (4:2 against Egypt), would have even been nominated for the tournament. Senegal around star attacker and ex-Munich player Sadio Mané is playing in Group C and will face Cameroon, Guinea and Gambia.
