Boston Red Sox Sign Starting Pitcher Lucas Giolito to Two-Year Deal

The Boston Red Sox have signed starting pitcher Lucas Giolito to a two-year, $38.5 million contract, according to Jeff Passan ofESPN.

Giolito will have the option to become a free agent at the end of the first season of the agreement.

The 29-year-old right-hander suited up for three teams this past season, posting an 8-15 record and a 4.88 ERA. Giolito struck out 204 batters in 184 1/3 innings while allowing 73 walks in 33 starts. He gave up 41 home runs, three fewer than Lance Lynn at the top of major league baseball.

Giolito initially started his season well with the Chicago White Sox. In his seventh season in Chicago, he went 6-6 with a 3.79 ERA.

Things later got complicated after a trade sent him to the Los Angeles Angels on July 26. After posting a disappointing performance in California (1-5, 6.89 ERA), the Angels placed him on waivers.

He was claimed by the Cleveland Guardians on August 31, but also disappointed in Ohio, going 1-4 with a 7.04 ERA in six starts.

Selected 16th overall in the 2012 draft by the Washington Nationals, Giolito boasts a 61-62 record and 4.43 ERA in 178 starts and two career relief appearances.
