Austria’s Davis Cup team now knows the exact location and date for the away international match against Ireland.
The game will be played immediately after the Australian Open on the 3rd/4th. February in Limerick, Ireland’s third largest city. Captain Jürgen Melzer’s team, led by Sebastian Ofner and Dominic Thiem, who have planned the trip for red-white-red, are the clear favorites.
The hosts have already agreed on the surface; the game will be played on a hard court.
Objectives clearer than ever before
With the expected victory in the World Group I play-off against Ireland, which currently does not even have a player in the top 1,000, promotion to the 2025 qualifying round could be achieved with another win in the autumn.
The well-traveled and experienced ÖTV captain Melzer has never been to Ireland himself. For him, however, the objective is clearer than ever before. “In the end it’s about just going there, getting three points and flying back home. That’s definitely the mission,” the 42-year-old former top ten man didn’t mince his words.
Melzer will only determine who is on the ÖTV team at a later date. “We will definitely create a powerful team,” he is confident. The ÖTV men got into the current situation this year after 3-1 defeats in Croatia and at home against Portugal.
The match will be held in the city, which has a population of almost 100,000, in the UL Sport Arena, which has space for 1,735 fans. It is located on the university grounds. Exact game dates are Saturday, February 3rd, 2024 (1:00 p.m. CET) and Sunday (12:00 p.m.). The captain of the opponents is ex-professional Conor Niland.
