Astralpool Sabadell suffers defeat against Novi Beograd and hopes rest on Brescia’s match

Astralpool Sabadell lost this Wednesday (7-11) against Serbian Novi Beograd and only a defeat this afternoon for Italian Brescia against last-place Steaua Bucharest, which has not yet scored, would allow it to qualify for the second group stage.

The Catalan team depended on itself on the last day, which was also played in its Can Llong pool, but this time it could not repeat the victory of the first round against an opponent that was already qualified.

Fran Valera gave the first and only advantage of the match for a team that quickly saw how the three visiting stars – Filipovic, Vlachopoulos and Álvaro Granados – came into play to make it 1-3.

A goal from Kosta Averka served to reduce the deficit and reach the end of the first quarter with only one goal down (2-3). But practically the same story was repeated in a second quarter in which Sabadell was not able to equalize, while the Balkans, with Lukic’s 2-4, took control to the scoreboard.

The goals from Alberto Barroso and Blai Mallarach immediately found the visitor’s response with two new goals to make it 4-6 at halftime.

Novi Beograd, much more fluid in attack, escaped on the scoreboard with new goals from Drasovic, from a penalty, and Radulovic, to double the home team’s lead (4-8).

Barroso, with a penalty, was the only one capable of scoring in this quarter for the locals, while Vlachopoulos took advantage of the opportunities to make it 5-9 with 8 minutes remaining.

Quim Colet’s team desperately tried to make a comeback, after Mallarach’s 6-9, but the tenth visitor goal, by the veteran Filipovic, condemned Sabadell’s options.

The final score of the match, with a goal for each squad, confirmed the Vallesan defeat in the face of general disappointment.
