Golden Double: Auvergne Archers Crowned European Champions in Archery

A golden double! Three Auvergne archers are crowned European champions in archery, in Essen, Germany, this Sunday, May 12. Rio’s Lisa Barbelin and Caroline Lopez won the women’s team final, while Clermontois Thomas Chirault also took the first step of the podium with the men’s team.

Two titles before the Paris Olympic Games

In the final, the trio of French women (the two Riomoises and Amélie Cordeau) beat the Dutch 5 to 3 (55-55, 50-51, 52-51, 52-50). On the boys’ side, Auvergnat accompanied by Franc-Comtois Jean-Charles Valladont and Baptiste Addis dominated the Italians, winning 6 to 0 (53-51, 52-50, 57-56). Those are the first two French titles in 10 years!

Of a good omen before the Paris Olympics and the archery competitions on July 28 and 29. “We are in the final stretch before the Paris Olympic Games and we needed that little spark to take the team to the highest level”, rejoices Thomas Chirault. A goal also for the two Riomoises. “We gave everything we could in this final and I am very proud of us”reacts Lisa Barbelin, the leader of this French women’s team. “The Olympic Games are achievable! We can do it, we will work hard for it”adds Caroline Lopez.
