Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto Win Women’s Doubles Title at Guwahati Masters 2023 Badminton Tournament

India’s Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto won the women’s doubles title at the Guwahati Masters 2023 badminton tournament on Sunday.

Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto, the second seeds at the BWF Super 100 tournament, beat the Chinese Taipei’s Sung Shuo Yun and Yu Chien Hui 21-13, 21-19 to win what was their second title as a pair.

The Indian badminton duo won the Abu Dhabi Masters Super 100 tourney earlier this year. Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto also made the final of the Syed Modi International Super 300 tournament last week in Lucknow but lost the title decider to Japan’s Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi.

In Guwahati, the first game was one-way traffic in favour of the Indian badminton players. After the scores were tied at 1-1, Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto seized control of the proceedings. The Indian duo consistently kept building up on their lead before comfortably closing out the opener to take the lead.

The Indian shuttlers picked up right from where they left off in the second game and took a five-point advantage into the break. With their backs against the wall, the Taipei pair came out swinging after the restart and reduced the deficit to just one point at 12-11, triggering a scramble to the finish line.

The momentum seemed to have turned against the Indian players with Sung Shuo Yun and Yu Chien Hui finally levelling the score at 19-all. However, with the home crowd getting behind them, Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto dug deep to pick up the final two points of the match to secure the title.

The 40-minute affair was the first clash between the two competing teams on the BWF World Tour stage.

Results at the Guwahati Masters 2023 badminton tournament will count towards players’ qualifying rankings for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
