Nathan Aspinall was surprisingly eliminated from the World Darts Championship in the second round on Saturday evening. The number six in the world lost without a chance to Ricky Evans: 3-0.

With Aspinall there is another top player who has to put the world title out of mind before Christmas. Earlier, Peter Wright (number four in the world) and Danny Noppert (number seven in the world) committed a slip.

Aspinall reached the semi-finals of the World Cup at Alexandra Palace in 2019 and 2020. In the past three editions he reached the third round. This year, Aspinall won, among other things, the World Matchplay in July.

Aspinall didn’t stand a chance against Evans. Evans, number 53 in the world, allowed Aspinall only two legs. Evans threw an average of 99.38 (with three darts). Aspinall achieved an average of 90.54.

For Aspinall it was only his first match this World Cup. He got one bye for the previous round. Evans won 3-0 against Simon Adams in the previous round. In the next round, Evans will face Daryl Gurney.

The World Cup continues after Christmas with the third round. There are still four Dutch people in the tournament. Raymond van Barneveld meets Jim Williams, Berry van Peer takes on Damon Heta and Michael van Gerwen and Richard Veenstra meet.
