Ancient City of Hasankeyf: Uncovering a Rare 800-Year-Old Bronze “Healing Bowl”

A city steeped in history. Located in the southeast of Turkey, the ancient city of Hasankeyf – nestled in the province of Batman – has been inhabited for almost 12,000 years. Over the centuries, multiple civilizations have established themselves there to control the region. In February 2020, this historic site – still visited and inhabited in the 21st century – was unfortunately submerged under water, following the construction of a dam 40 km downstream.

This Monday, December 4, Arkeonews reported on a recent discovery in the sector. During archaeological excavations, researchers working under the direction of Zekai Erdal, associate professor at the Department of Art History at the Faculty of Literature at Mardin Artuklu University, unearthed an extremely rare artifact: a ” healing bowl” in bronze and 800 years old.

The discovery of this bronze “healing bowl” particularly delighted Zekai Erdal. The specialist, whose comments are quoted by the specialized site, explained that only twenty-two similar artifacts had so far been discovered around the world.

This object, notably decorated with talismans, verses and seals, was used in popular medicine in the medieval Islamic world. The associate professor said motifs of two-headed dragons, scorpions, snakes and dogs had also been identified.

“It is assumed that the person who drank water from the healing bowl was supposed to be protected against the bites of dogs, snakes and scorpions”continued the researcher. “The bowl [était aussi] used to cure exposed people [à de tels risques].”

To understand the interest that this artifact represented in the eyes of the inhabitants, it is therefore important to analyze it by focusing on the context of traditional medicine, continues Arkeonews. Other common practices in Islamic civilization include amulets, talismans and spells.

Scientists also uncovered two “zihgir” made of bone and agate. In the Middle Ages, this ring-shaped tool – which archers wore on their fingers so that the archery string would not damage their limbs – was widespread in the Muslim world.

One of these rings was discovered in a shrine. According to Zekai Erdal, this suggests that the person buried near this artifact was of a high social standing, although their identity has not been confirmed.
