Amateur Club Knokke Misses Out on Cup Stunt After Penalty Kick Loss to OH Leuven

Amateur club Knokke just missed out on a new stunt in the cup. It forced penalties against OH Leuven. OHL won the penalty series 2-4.

Key moment: Knokke is the better team for 120 minutes, but loses it in the penalty kicks. First Jalloh kicks Leysen weakly, then Addo shoots over wildly.

Man of the Match: A dull and uninspired OHL had a lot of trouble tonight with the Knokke striker Jalloh, but he forgot to reward his good game in the penalty series.

Striking: Twice this season amateur club Knokke took on a first division team, twice managing to save from penalties. And that while in our own competition it just doesn’t work with 19 out of 45.

Dreaming of a new stunt

Just over a month ago, Knokke turned out to be the surprise of this cup campaign with a victory against KV Mechelen. Yet the hunger of the ambitious Knockers had not yet been satisfied.

With OHL they did not get the top club they dreamed of, but they did secretly dream of a new stunt. And it would soon become apparent that that dream was not unfounded.

The home team created the best chances in the first half and pushed back a very weak OHL. But just before the half hour, the class difference would emerge.

One good action was enough for a Leuven goal, Dom cleverly placed the ball in the far corner.

OHL escapes disgrace

A downer, but the West Flemish certainly did not let the deficit bother them. And on the stroke of half time they would be rewarded for that. Pieters nodded a corner into the far side netting, repeating everything at sea.

The rest of the game would be a lot less entertaining. A particularly passive OHL did nothing at all in the second half, and Knokke could no longer really threaten Leysen.

If the extensions subsequently prove to be futile, the ball must be placed on the spot. The perfect opportunity for Knokke to also play OHL after Mechelen and thus end up in the quarter-finals of the Cup.

But then things go wrong. Leuven proves to be the most cool-headed, Jalloh and Addo settle the match with 2 painful misses. OHL thus escapes disgrace, but will have to do something different in the next round.

Nils Pierre (Knokke): “We started the match very well and were able to take the lead straight away, but we missed those opportunities. In the end we deserved to come back and end up in a lottery with penalties. Then anything can happen. It’s Too bad because we wanted to write history, but we can also be proud.”

Ewoud Pletinckx (OHL): “It was a real success today. The fact that we were finally able to take it to ourselves is a great relief. We had difficulty with the artificial grass, but we did not show enough. The most difficult part was, however, happened, because we took the lead. Then we gave away too much space and corner kicks. And too many technical errors crept into our game, we have to be able to deliver quality for 90 minutes.”

It is Leuven that gets to the spot first. Schrijvers sets a good example for his teammates and puts the ball nicely in the top corner.

Time for penalties!

The extra time did not produce a winner, so Knokke gets an excellent opportunity in the penalty kicks to pull off another major stunt!

Knokke also scores a free kick around the OHL 16. Leysen makes a good save on the deviation in front of goal.

Holzhauser sends his teammates forward again for a free kick. The ball can indeed be headed towards the goal, but Goblet picks it easily.

Addo cuts out Sagrado and then finds Aelterman on the 16, but his one-time attempt goes over the top. Penalties are gradually becoming unavoidable.

More and more space is created, more and more players are included.

On the other side, Thorsteinsson sends another desperate attempt. His swipe easily ends up in the hands of Goblet.

Schingtienne again!

There is a moment of confusion in the Leuven defense and Jalloh almost benefits from this! Just before he can lash out, Schingtienne saves again. OHL plays with fire.

Addo can just cut into the 16 between 2 men and take a shot. The Ghanaian then loses all composure and kicks wildly wide.
