Alpine skiing: Sarrazin sets his first best time on Stelvio

Alpine skiing

Cyprien Sarrazin opened the speed week in Bormio with a best training time. The Frenchman was 0.41 seconds faster on Tuesday than the American Ryan Cochran-Siegle, who won the Super-G in Bormio in 2020. The best Austrian was Daniel Danklmaier from Styria in 14th place. From the group of favorites, the seven-time Stelvio winner Dominik Paris, including the Super-G, showed the fastest training run and finished seventh.

The Swiss Marco Odermatt and the Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde took tenth and eleventh place one after the other on St. Stefani Day. Last year’s winner Vincent Kriechmayr ended up 23rd in an Austrian pack. Stefan Babinsky (22nd) and World Cup leader Marco Schwarz, Daniel Hemetsberger and Christopher Neumayer were also represented in ranks 24 to 26.

“It was not bad. I didn’t give 100 percent, but I tried to show a good run. On some goals I didn’t get the lines I expected,” Kriechmayr summed up. For Schwarz it was necessary to switch from the technical competitions to the speed races. “Going back on the long skis for the first day, coming in with a good feeling. That was a good fit. It was a feeling, still far from racing,” explained the winner of Madonna’s night slalom classic.

GEPA/Mathias Mandl Daniel Danklmaier was the best Austrian, 14th.

“It’s always nice to be back in Bormio,” said Paris. “The slope is nice, but the ice still has grip. Bumpy, but in good condition.” His compatriot Mattia Casse even said after his ride in third place: “Maybe it’s a little more ‘humane’ than in previous years, but the Stelvio is always demanding.”

Wednesday training brought forward

Felix Hacker (43rd), Stefan Rieser (57th) and Manuel Traninger (66th), who will mainly be in action in the European Cup this season, are also there in Bormio. Otmar Striedinger was at the back of the field in 53rd place. Raphael Haaser retired on the difficult route. In order to protect the slopes, the start of Wednesday training was brought forward by one hour to 10:30 a.m.

So far this season, after all competitions in Zermatt/Cervinia and Beaver Creek were canceled, only two downhill runs have been included in the rankings. In Val Gardena, the American Bryce Bennett and Paris prevailed, the ÖSV athletes each missed out on the top places. Kriechmayr won the Super-G in Val Gardena. The downhill is on the program in Bormio on Thursday, and a Super-G on Friday (11.30 a.m., live on ORF1).
