Algerian Athletes Shine on the International Stage in Pivotal Pre-Olympic Year

Algerian athletes from different disciplines, including disabled sports, achieved, in 2023, convincing and promising results at the regional, continental and international levels, in a pivotal pre-Olympic year for the race for qualification for the Paris summer games. 2024 and the Paralympics, which will mark the end of a highly anticipated Olympic cycle.

The multiple performances achieved, among others, at the 15th Arab Sports Games in Algeria, closed with a historic harvest of 255 medals, made it possible to release pleasant surprises for national sport in several disciplines, such as boxing, athletics, judo and swimming.

They also constituted an elite core capable of succeeding in future competitions, even if it would not be for the next Olympics and JP-2024. Traditional providers of medals, athletics, boxing and judo have been “faithful” to their custom, in addition to other disciplines such as weightlifting, associated wrestling, swimming or badminton, which have left their mark in the face of a tough competition.

Marked by a dazzling performance by Algerian athletes, including the “XXL” performance of swimmer Jaouad Syoud, author of 11 gold medals, the edition of the Arab games will also have allowed the emergence of new talents, like the hope of women’s cycling, Nesrine Houili, also the first Algerian cyclist qualified for the 2024 Olympics, in addition to windsurfers Ines Chellali (ILCA 4), Ramy Boudrouma and Amina Berrichi, qualified for the Olympics in the IQ Foil specialty, or even the boxer Imane Khélif . With 255 charms, including 106 in vermeil and 77 silver, the national sport managed to bring its medal haul to a total of 1,136 consecrations, including 361 gold, in nine appearances.

This historic performance was followed, a few months later, by an exceptional performance by gymnast Kaylia Nemour, a 16-year-old rising star, crowned vice-world champion on the uneven bars in Antwerp (Belgium), a historic “first” in African and Arab level, with qualification for the 2024 Olympics at stake.

Handisport, as usual, has left its mark on the national sporting scene, with several world and continental recognitions in para-athletics, para-judo, para-powerlifting, goalball, among others. Performances which should be followed by a series of good results, during the international deadlines which are on the horizon. In team sports, the year 2023 was undoubtedly marked by the first coronation of the handball players of HBC El-Biar, victorious in the final of the sixth edition of the Arab Women’s Club Championship (November 16-25).

A consecration, the first in the annals of El-Biaroises who managed an exemplary tournament during this competition. Volleyball, for its part, marked its return to the continental scene, thanks to the men’s national selection, author of a good performance at the African Nations Championship in Egypt, before missing the coronation in the final, against the country host, whom she had nevertheless beaten in a group match. This second place allowed Algeria to qualify for the 2025 World Cup.
